
From idea to launch in 90 days: the focused founder playbook
Ninety days is a generous timeline for a focused founder and a brutal one for an unfocused one. The constraint is the point — it forces you to cut every nice-to-have and ship a real thing real people can pay for. Here's how to spend each of the twelve weeks.
- Weeks 1–4: validate the problem with 30 conversations before you build.
- Weeks 5–8: build the thinnest possible version that solves one job.
- Weeks 9–12: launch to a real audience, charge money, learn fast.
- The plan doesn't change because of inspiration — only because of evidence.
The 90-day arc
Every month has one outcome. Month one: proof there's a real problem worth solving. Month two: a working product in real users' hands. Month three: paying customers and the first signal of whether you have anything close to product-market fit.
Month one — validate before you build
Talk to 30 potential customers in 30 days. Not friends, not Twitter, not investors. The actual people whose lives you intend to improve. Ask what they do today, what's broken, what they've already tried, and what they'd pay to solve it.
By week four you should be able to write a single paragraph describing exactly who your customer is, what specific pain you solve, and how they'd describe the value to a peer. If you can't, do not start building — keep talking. Building before this is the most common 90-day failure mode.
Month two — build the smallest real thing
Pick the single most painful job from the 30 conversations. Build the thinnest product that does that job end-to-end. One screen if possible. Auth, the core action, save the result. Nothing else.
Use templates, frameworks, and AI generation aggressively. You're not earning points for cleverness — you're earning them for shipping. Aim to have a real user touching the real product by end of week six, even if it's ugly.
Every week, list everything you want to build. Cut the bottom 70% before you start. Founders who keep all of it ship none of it.
Month three — launch, charge, iterate
Week nine: launch to the people you interviewed in month one. They're warm; they remember the conversation; they're the most likely first paid customers you'll ever have. Charge money from day one — even $19/month filters for real intent.
Weeks 10–12 are pure feedback loops. Talk to every paying user weekly. Ship one improvement per week based on what you hear. By day 90 you should know whether you have a real business, a hobby, or a beautifully built solution to a problem nobody actually has.
- Do you have at least 10 paying customers?
- Do at least 3 of them use the product weekly without prompting?
- When you ask 'would you be very disappointed if this disappeared?' do 40% say yes?
- Two yeses out of three = keep going. Zero or one = pivot or stop, with no shame.
